You’re planning a vacation: Should you join a group tour or arrange your own trip instead ? The answer depends on your priorities. If you want to venture off the beaten path or attempt an ambitious expedition,a tour company provides guides and a detailed itinerary that’ll maximize your experience. A tour company also handles transportation, meals and accommodations, and you’ll be with like-minded travel companions.
On the other hand, if maximum flexibility and minimum cost are your goals , you may want to arrange your own trip. You’ll need to research your destination and make your own hotel, meal and transportation arrangements. The upside is that you’ll be able to make a spontaneous detour to, say, attend a local festival or explore an off-the-map village. And you won’t be paying for trip planners and tour guides.
BOTTOM LINE: What will provide you with the most vacation value? If you’re a veteran traveler, then DIY often is the way to go. But don’t judge tour options by price tag alone. An expert leader and exceptional itinerary may make a seemingly pricey tour a priceless adventure.
